Please enjoy this piece of flash fiction, “Life of Service.” It is a step back in time.
The main character is Joe Pendergast, the same person in my debut novel, “Fadeaway Joe.” In the novel, Joe is an out-of-work aging bouncer who suffers from early onset dementia. “Life of Service” takes a look at Joe when he was ten years younger, still collecting bad debts for his crime boss and putting a scare into people. Joe is not a young man in this story, but he’s young enough to get thejob done.
I read “Life of Service” in public on Aug. 22. 2023, the same day “Fadeway Joe” was published. The event was held in Richmond near a reservoir, and it was dubbed “Noir At The Voir,” a variation on Noir at the Bar, which are popular reading events held around the country. See the graphic below.
I hope you enjoy “Life of Service.”
